This striking hand woven indigo dyed “futongawa” or “futonji” folk textile is made from medium weight hand spun “aizome” (indigo) dyed cotton. Meiji period, ca. 1880. It has a blue and white “kiku karakusa” (chrysanthemum and scrolling vine) pattern done in the traditional resist stencil-dyeing technique called "katazome."
