Edo Period Iron Choshi, Phoenix Motif, Cloisonne Cover
December 2013 Auction by Far East Asian Art

A fine, Edo period iron choshi (sake pot) with cloisonne cover. Relief decoration in the casting includes a band of Shippo (precious objects) decoration around the rim, within a band of karakusa, within another band of smaller Shippo. A band of Manji fret decoration around the girth above 10 evenly spaced large roundels with Phoenix (Ho-o) and Paulownia - almost certainly the Mon of the Kawakatsu clan which is exclusively associated with this motif...
