Here we have a minimalist impressionist wooden sculpture that captures in it's pure line the very essence of the Buddha. This piece is a well -smoothed and mature portable sutra container of the Shugendo mountain asectic - see foot note. The cylinder is carved and hollowed from a single piece of wood, which, over centuries of use has developed a patina that simply glows.
