This is an Edo period wooden netsuke of a Shishi that was once totally covered with red lacquer or paint. The shishi has its paws on a mokugyo - See Footnote. The face of the netsuke is angry as if it is protecting the mokugyo. The netsuke has superb patina where the old lacquer and red paint has worn through.
