An Edo Pd Turquoise & Aubergine Bowl - 1830

A most unusual and rare Edo Period shallow bowl made for the Duke of Tosa in 1830. The top of the bowl is a bright turquoise color with an impressed design of a scholar seated at his desk and a border of flowers on the upper inner rim. Surprisingly, the back of the bowl is decorated in a dark aubergine glaze - no design. There are three potters stilt marks which were the remains of three tiny clay stilts to hold the piece up from the kiln floor during the firing process...
