A Japanese Arita Blue and White Lipstick Dish - Meiji
April 2013 Auction by Far East Asian Art
A nice little Japanese lipstick dish used by Geisha and Maiko to hold the red lipstick in their elaborate facial makeup. The dish is decorated with two flying cranes separated with pentagonal geometric designs - all in underglaze cobalt blue. The piece measures 1 7/8" diameter by 3/4" deep and is in generally good condition with normal light wear to to the rims of the base, a kiln flaw hairline and a small chip on the outer surface. We date it to the late Meiji period, circa 1910.
